Clifton Gunderson Expands International and National Presence with Addition of Four New Firms

Clifton Gunderson has expanded its presence, resources and expertise at both the international and national level with the addition of three new firms – U.S. Tax Advantage, Humes & Barrington, Stockton Bates, and the resources and talent of the former BKD-Merrillville office to strengthen the firm’s presence in the Chicagoland area.
By combining resources and expertise with these four organizations, Clifton Gunderson – ranked among the nation’s largest certified public accounting and consulting firms – strengthens its presence as one of the leading suppliers of international tax services with the acquisition of USTA. The firm also expands its national footprint in several new markets including St. Louis (Humes & Barrington) and Philadelphia (Stockton Bates). Clifton Gunderson adds the talent and expertise of 112 professionals and a long list of new clients.
Here is specific information about each newly joined firm to Clifton Gunderson:
USTA: An international tax consulting services firm with locations in New York, Boston, Chicago, Milwaukee and Houston. The acquisition is effective May 1, 2010. By combining resources and expertise, Clifton Gunderson and USTA become one of the leading providers of international tax services among public accounting and consulting firms. Through this acquisition, Clifton Gunderson adds 14 tax professionals to the firm, including partners Mark Gasbarra and Lester Fuwa. Gasbarra joins Clifton Gunderson as managing partner of Global Tax Services and brings with him three decades of international tax experience serving the complex tax needs of Fortune 500 companies. He formed USTA five years ago with the vision of creating a global tax services practice while leveraging the benefits of superior tax technology. Prior to forming USTA, Gasbarra was a senior international tax partner and national practice leader at two Big Four firms.
Humes & Barrington: A full-service certified public accounting firm based in St. Louis, Missouri with strong tax, assurance, IT, wealth management and general business consulting practices. The merger is effective June 1, 2010. For 25 years, Humes & Barrington has served clients in the St. Louis marketplace and has been recognized as one of the best CPA firms in St. Louis. The firm’s experts provide service to clients in a number of industries including manufacturing, distribution, non-profit, construction and real estate. Through this merger, seven Humes & Barrington partners including Brian Humes, Jay Barrington, Marilyn Lunnemann, Greg Schmittgens, Joan Humes, Joe Herman and Barb DuBois join Clifton Gunderson. In addition, 53 professionals from Humes & Barrington join the firm.
Stockton Bates: A firm of certified public accountants in the Delaware Valley with offices in Philadelphia and Lancaster, Pennsylvania and Haddonfield, New Jersey. The combination of Clifton Gunderson and Stockton Bates is effective June 1, 2010. For more than 100 years, Stockton Bates has earned a solid reputation with its clients in the Delaware Valley for quality service and expertise. As a full-service firm with a strong tax and assurance practice, its experts serve clients in a number of industries including construction, manufacturing and wholesale distribution, insurance and not-for-profit. Through this combination, three Stockton Bates partners including John Gallagher, Bruce Lynch and James Smith as well as 29 professionals join Clifton Gunderson.
BKD – Merrillville: The Merrillville, Indiana location of BKD LLP has a strong tax and assurance practice and will strengthen Clifton Gunderson’s presence in the Chicagoland area by adding talent and resources to its growing Greater Chicagoland practice. The combination of BKD-Merrillville and Clifton Gunderson is effective June 1, 2010. Through this acquisition, Clifton Gunderson adds the expertise of six assurance and tax professionals – including tax partner John Matthiesen.
